It's Groundhogs Day!

Does anyone else want to help me kidnap Puxatawney Phil and drown him in a nearby river?
FROM NEWSWEEK:

(PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa.) The world's most famous groundhog has seen his shadow which, legend has it, means this already long winter will last for six more weeks.

Punxsutawney (punx-suh-TAW'-nee) Phil's forecast was announced in front of thousands of revelers gathered at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. They gathered Monday morning in near freezing temperatures, with many revelers buoyed by the Super Bowl victory by the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday night.

German tradition holds that if a hibernating animal casts a shadow on Feb. 2 — the Christian holiday of Candlemas — winter would last another six weeks. If no shadow was seen, legend said spring would come early.

Since 1887, Phil has seen his shadow 97 times, hasn't seen it 15 times, and there are no records for nine years, according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.

  1. I bet beaver skin would be good material for a nice winter hat.

  4. I agree so much with MrsPebs, Let Not a bit of snow here all winter long!
Down here in the south, the trees are budding out and in a few weeks it will be a beautiful spring. Went to the beach last week, it was 80+ degrees. We all need a extra sleep once in a while, Let Paunxsutawney stay in his hole and get a bit more rest.

  5. I was wondering why we have that tradition. But like you said, I can't even remember the last time the little rat had good news.

  6. I, for one, am so done with snow. This area has had it's snowiest January since we moved here--just a couple of inches shy of the record set in 1978! (40.5 inches this year, 42.8 inches then.)The average is 17 inches.
