Before paint shop or photoshop or any of the other well-advanced photo/art programs out there...there was microsoft "Paint". Simple. Growing up, I became somewhat of an expert with it. I spent most of my time on it, however, just making new backgrounds for my computer desktop. These are some of the patterns I made with Paint (keep in mind I was only like 12-15 years old with no formal art education yet) (i also seemed to really like circles...) :
